Jazz Pharmaceuticals: Studios Architects. Palo Alto, CA. 90,000 sf. Completed 2019
Jazz is the collaborative and yet personal art of improvisation and constant evolution. Much like the music composition it's named after, Jazz Pharmaceuticals is unique in its approaches to developing life-changing medicine, including those for leukemia, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea. Every year, as part of its corporate responsibility effort, Jazz Pharmaceuticals brings its patients into its Palo Alto headquarter to share their live experiences with the local communities, and to further understanding of patients’ unique needs and importance of medical research work. The Jazz office, therefore, is not only a workspace, but also a place where stories of people, who depend on these life-changing medicines, are told.
Located in a newly constructed two story L-shaped building developed by Stanford University, the new Jazz space is designed around the concept of "One Jazz", which echoes the the synergy between the patients and the research community. The Hub, comprised of reception, conference center, lounge, and event spaces, anchors the two private workspace wings consist of open and closed office spaces, meeting and phone rooms, coffee areas, and support functions. By breaking up larges clusters of workstations into smaller "neighborhoods" using meeting rooms and support programs, the spatial layout addresses several key user needs, including privacy, formation of a close-knit team, proximity to diverse function. The creative expression of the Jazz theme is realized through the modular abstraction of musical instruments in the ceiling and fixture designs, as well as in the dark and eclectic finish palette that gives the space a jazz club vibe.
