DoorDash: Studios Architects. San Francisco, CA. 84,000 sf across 2 floors. Designed 2019, completed in 2021

DoorDash's service is centered on the ideas of empowering small local businesses, innovating new modes of living through spatial connections, and bringing together diverse people and cultures. Located in the SoMa district of San Francisco, DoorDash's new corporate headquarter is designed to the overarching idea of weaving the brand's vision of connectivity, innovation, inclusion, and accessibility into the Bay Area city's rich historical and cultural fabric. Within this guiding theme, we created a unique identity for each floor by retelling a significant event in the city's history and narrating it through imageries, installations, and spatial experiences.

In the 2 floors designed so far, Floor 3 reconstructs 1940s Fillmore Jazz district as "Harlem of the West". Much like Fillmore in the 1940s, Floor 3's spatial logic is centered on the idea of a "Main Street", with the more "bustling" programs-- community spaces, break areas, collaboration zones, and conferencing functions-- concentrated along the main circulation path. Floor 6 tells the continuing story of the SF Pride movement from 1970 - beyond; limited design scope for this floor includes refreshening the main lounge space and break areas. We adopted a rainbow color scheme on grayscale backdrops to give the space a clean and timeless look.  Throughout the design process, we partnered with DoorDash's internal branding team to integrate brand vision simultaneously with architectural design, expanding the branding experience beyond vinyl graphics to give a more premier feel.  Integrated and experiential strategies include digital screens recessed in physical space dividers, large scale murals by local artists, and custom installations that tie the DoorDash logo and iconography to thematic motifs and textures.
