Nested House: Sacramento, CA. UC Berkeley ED 11B, Spring 2010
The Nested House is a small private residence/ retreat house located on the Sacramento River delta. The building, which adopts the narrow space between two buttress walls of a levee, opens to a scenic view of the site as well as an easy access to river-boating. The design features a two story structure nested within high levee walls, which shelters the building from wind and flood as well as provide its structural integrity. The structure of the house is designed intentionally to be fragile so as to emphasize the massive form and protective nature of the the levee walls. Furthermore, the house engages with the site by merging with the dock into a single stretch of land, allowing for greater congruity between land and water activities.
